Stadium roofs generated using the Combinatorial Equilibrium Modelling (CEM)

Structural Design V

The credo of the course is that true structural theory for architects can not be a simplification of the statics of the civil engineers. It is intended to help all those interested to enter the interesting world of structural engineering, to promote dialogue between architects and civil engineers, and thus to contribute to the development of architectural designs in which static and design concerns merge.

The course starts with a series of lectures that will introduce the main theory in the fields of parametric structural design and form- finding. In addition, a couple of tutorials will allow the students to learn the basics of Rhinoceros and Grasshopper. After, the students will be taught how to use two computational design tools: RhinoVault and Combinatorial Equilibrium Modelling (CEM), which they will use to design three-dimensional equilibrium forms for a given design problem.
